Young people and people in poverty are the two most underrepresented segments of the voting population. In 2010 only 21% of young people voted in the midterm election. Turnout has been increasing since the advent of online campaigning, especially in general elections, but nothing to offset the weight of the older vote. People in poverty, too, are less likely to head to the polls: less than 50% of those below the poverty line voted in 2012, comapred to the nearly 80% of average-income earners.
So we beg the question: Are our elected officials truly voted in by a majority if large, important factions of our society didn't have a voice in their election?
IMPACT DePaul - I Matter, Political Activism Can Too - seeks to change that. We spearhead voter registration campains and host educate yo'self sessions and student discussions on DePaul's Lincoln Park campus on topics such as: what your aldermen can do for you, corruption in Chicago, state of CPS and the IL Map Grant, CAPS, and protesting strategies of the past, present and futute.
IMPACT also visits Chicago High Schools and Homeless Shelters/Non-profits for voter registration and civic engagement workshops. IMPACT is a strictly nonpartisan organization. We disseminate intellectual and factual information unbiased by ideology, but still offer and encourage discussion on polarizing issues. We exist as a resource, not an influencer - only YOU should hold the power of your vote.
We are currently collaborating with other colleges in the country to organize a transnational demonstration against hate speech next fall.
We are always looking for volunteers! Reach out to us at impactdepaul@gmail.com or the Facebook page Impact.DePaul - we're on twitter and instagram too!
